While Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem for a Roman census, the time came for Mary to give birth. She delivered her "firstborn son" and, because there was no available space in the inn, she "wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger" (an animal feeding trough). In the nearby fields, shepherds were keeping watch over their flocks at night. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
This passage highlights the humble, unadorned circumstances of the Messiah's arrival, contrasting the powerful secular decree of Caesar Augustus with God's quiet fulfillment of prophecy through a baby in a manger. The message of the Saviour's birth was first delivered not to the elite, but to lowly, common labourers, emphasizing that Jesus came for all people.
