Historically, "Magi" referred to priests or wise men, possibly Persian astrologers, known for special knowledge. Guided by the star, the Magi find Jesus in a house (not a stable as often depicted), worship Him, and offer gifts of gold (kingship), frankincense (divinity), and myrrh (foreshadowing suffering/burial). Warned in a dream not to return to Herod, the Magi leave by a different route, protecting Jesus from the jealous king's deadly plans.
Significance of this text - it shows early recognition of Jesus by Gentiles (non-Jews), and establishes the contrast between true worship (Magi) and wicked ambition (Herod).
